Charming stroll through Talmont-sur-Gironde
A visit to this 13th-century citadel and walled town, listed as one of the “Most Beautiful Villages in France”, is a must.
Perched on a rocky promontory overlooking the Gironde estuary, Talmont-sur-Gironde was built along the lines of a medieval bastide town.
Considered the capital of the hollyhock, every year the walled town with its narrow streets and houses with white facades and blue shutters is decked out in flowers of every color.
What is there to see in Talmont-sur-Gironde?
Stroll through the streets and alleyways, filled with artisans and artists, painters, potters, stylists, souvenir stores, cafés and restaurants. At the foot of the cliffs, the Romanesque church of Sainte-Radegonde, a jewel of Saintonge Romanesque art, watches over the town and offers a superb panorama of the ocean.
Follow the cliff path to reach the harbor with its fishing boats and stilted carrelets.
Housed in the old schoolhouse, the museum recounts the curious history of the site and the traditional fisheries of the estuary. Fun and educational, it allows visitors to discover the environment and the activities of the fishermen.
