Close to our campsite near Royan, the Pointe de Suzac is a natural site of exceptional beauty, perfect for nature lovers and hikers. This rocky cape overlooking the Gironde estuary offers spectacular views of the Atlantic Ocean and surrounding countryside.
The footpath along the cliff face allows you to discover the diversity of the landscape, from panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean to pine forests. At both high and low tide, the Pointe de Suzac reveals all its beauty. The trail also leads to the Vergnes beach in Meschers-sur-Gironde, from where you can admire the famous carrelets, the traditional fishing huts that characterize the region.
It’s also a haven for a rich biodiversity, with numerous species of seabirds and local plants. At the end of the day, the Pointe de Suzac offers a magical spectacle as the sun slowly sets behind the horizon, bathing the sea and cliffs in golden and orange hues. The scene is particularly impressive, creating a unique moment of serenity. What’s the best way to explore Pointe de Suzac?
The walk is an opportunity to get a closer look at the flora and fauna that characterize the estuary.
Pointe de Suzac has always been a strategic site, as evidenced by the ruined walls of a Napoleonic-era fort, the presence of Gallo-Roman foundations and numerous German blockhouses from the Second World War.
Once you’ve reached the Pointe de Suzac, the return journey to our campsite in Charente-Maritime can be made through the forest, with its many species: maritime pines, holm oaks, dune carnations…
You can also stop off at the Parc de l’Estuaire, where the discovery trail and temporary exhibition “A marée basse” are freely accessible.
